Looking forward to hosting a graduation party or a Victoria Day barbecue? You’ll want to make sure your deck and patio are in great shape for your guests. Here’s a quick DIY checklist to help you give your deck a once-over. As always, if you’re unsure about the condition, it’s best to contact a professional contractor for an evaluation and repair recommendations.
Structural Integrity
Does your deck feel solid underfoot? This can be a strong indicator of its overall condition, but you’ll also want to check for loose, rotting, or cracked boards, as well as any signs of sagging or shifting. One key area to inspect is the deck’s ledger board connection to the home. If it’s loose or missing, it’s considered a serious structural concern.
Hardware
The strength of any deck depends on what’s holding it together. If you notice rusted or corroded nails, screws, or brackets—or missing fasteners—your deck is likely due for some maintenance.
Surface Condition
Mould, mildew, and algae buildup aren’t just unsightly—they can also create slip hazards. Warped or uneven boards, steps, or patio pavers are additional trip hazards that should be addressed.
Railings & Guards
Some of the most common (and not always obvious) safety concerns involve railings and guards. Loose railings, unsecured handrails, or improperly spaced balusters can pose risks, especially for children, pets, and older adults.
Furniture & Surroundings
Take a step back and assess your entire outdoor space. Is your barbecue positioned a safe distance from your home? Is your patio furniture clean, stable, and in good condition? Are there areas with standing water or overgrown landscaping that could obstruct walkways?
Taking a few minutes to inspect your deck and patio now can help prevent accidents later and ensure your space is ready for a safe, enjoyable season.
